Case Study for Customer
Location CO75:
Reservoir or Lake Use:
This is a fresh water lake utilized primarily for recreational
purposes. The lake is managed by a lake homeowners association.
Waterskiing, swimming, and fishing are primary uses. There are
approximately 60 homeowners living around the lake year round.
System Overview and Reservoir:
Surface area is 66 acres; when full, maximum volume is about 510
acre-feet, with a maximum and mean depth of 14’ and 8’,
respectively.
Reported Problem Before SolarBee Installation:
Homeowners on the lake noted frequent hydrogen sulfide (H2S)
odor problems, bottom water anoxia, low water clarity, algal
bloom problems, periodic fish kills, and lack of a viable
fishery in the lake. When using the lake for swimming, people
felt a need to shower directly after swimming.
SolarBee Installation:
Date: May 2003. Installed one solar-powered SB10000. August
2005, replaced unit with newer SB10000v12.
Results:
Water clarity has noticeably improved during the summers and
there have been no reported algal bloom problems or fish kills.
Residents no longer experience the hydrogen sulfide odors. At
least one family has noted that after approximately 40 years
living by the lake, only since the SolarBee was installed do
they no longer feel the need to shower immediately after
swimming in the lake. Dissolved oxygen is found throughout the
water column, and fish can now be found in all parts of the lake
rather than restricted to surface waters or around the lake’s
perimeter because of anoxic bottom waters. The circulation of
oxygen-rich water along the shoreline has oxidized surface
sediments, facilitating their compaction so that people now walk
on the sediments rather than sinking ankle-deep into anoxic
muck. Water skiers have easily adapted to the SolarBee unit, and
its physical presence on the lake has not been a problem. Lake
owners have been very pleased with the improved ecology of their
lake.
