Hidden Valley Lake was
pure, enchanting beauty.
This mountain lake’s
shimmering 101 acres
were a centerpiece of
swimming, boating and
trout fishing for the entire
community. Then blue-
green algae blooms set in,
and milfoil erupted with a
vengeance. “Our paradise
really suffered as a result,”
Valley’s Lake Committee
Chairman at the time. The
community tried to solve
this serious problem with
frequent applications of
expensive chemicals -- to
no avail.
SolarBee
By 2004, estimated annual herbicide applications would cost over $125,000, and Mr. Serventi and his
crew had had enough. “We did our homework and we were ready for a real solution -- SolarBee.”
Four SolarBee® SB10000v12 floating water circulators were installed on the lake in May. SolarBee
constantly lifts water up from the depths, and near laminar flow circulates it all across the lake’s
surface, emulating nature and bringing clean, clear healthy life back. By 2005, the blue-green algae
blooms and milfoil were gone, and water clarity increased from 6 to 23 feet. Also, the lake fisheries
became robust again (a record 8-pound trout was landed in 2007). “We got our crystal-clear
fishing/swimming/boating lake back,” exults Mr. Serventi. And don’t overlook dollars and sense. “We
more than paid for SolarBee with all the money saved on chemicals,” he added. What can solar-
powered, virtually maintenance-free SolarBee do for your lakeside community?

The treatment plant and reservoir at
Palmdale, California always strives to
maximize water quality. Part of the
challenge was blue-green algae that
choked the reservoir all summer,
giving the water bad taste and odor.
At first, Greg Dluzak coped by
dumping up to 2000 pounds of
copper sulfate into the lake each
week. But chemicals are costly – and
they'll cause environmental problems
down the road. Always open to
innovative solutions, Palmdale
installed seven SolarBee® water
circulators on the reservoir, and three
more in the storage tanks.
SolarBee's near laminar flow worked wonders. "Those algae blooms were virtually eliminated and
chemical treatments reduced to a minimum," reported Mr. Dluzak. In fact, the lake's water clarity
doubled. Also, SolarBee® balanced the water temperature and improved the catch rate for sport
fisherman. In the storage tanks, SolarBee's thorough mixing keeps temperature stratification and
stagnation to a minimum, thus providing good chlorine residual and reducing the risk of disinfection
byproducts. Thanks to SolarBee®, Palmdale's water is clear and clean. "SolarBee® keeps our water
fresher than ever," beams Mr. Dluzak. It can do the same for you.

Today, the Rochester
Wastewater Treatment Plant
in New Hampshire is a marvel
of efficiency. It wasn’t always
like that. The hitch was the
high cost of powering the
system’s 125hp aerators in
two holding lagoons.
“Electricity was costing a
small fortune,” laments David
Green, the plant’s Chief
Operator. And then it was
determined that the aeration
system needed a major
upgrade altogether – at an
estimated cost of $1.5 million.
In an effort to avoid this
expenditure, and to reduce
power consumption on an
ongoing basis, the State
Inspector from Concord
suggested a pilot study using
SolarBee™ water circulators
instead of mechanical
aerators.
Mr. Green and his team found this to be a much better solution. In all, five SolarBees were installed,
and their gentle laminar flow, running virtually free 24/7, achieved the same excellent levels of odor-free
compliance for TSS, ammonia and BOD as those costly aerators. But now, thanks to having
SolarBee™ instead of mechanical aerators, Rochester benefits in three big ways: 1. Energy savings of
more than $10,000 a month. 2. A means to eliminate $1.5 million in capital improvements. 3.
Maintenance costs that are about 90% less than they were for the aerators. “We’re thrilled with
SolarBee’s performance,” says Mr. Green. “SolarBee™ is great for the environment, great for our rate
payers and a major success for Rochester.”
