Reservoir or Lake Use:
Municipal wastewater treatment system, serving 15,000 residents

System Overview and Reservoir:
This is a 4-pond wastewater treatment system: Pond 1 is 2.27 acres, 9.5 ft deep, 5.8 MG capacity,
loading is 1,100 lbs of BOD/acre/day, and has installed 100 hp of diffused aeration operating 24
hrs/day.  Pond 2 is 6.0 acres, 10 ft deep, 17.5 MG capacity, and has installed 60 hp of diffused
aeration operating 24 hrs/day. Pond 3 is 5.7 acres, 10 ft deep, 16.5 MG capacity, has no grid aeration.
Pond 4 is 2.0 acres, 10 ft. deep, 5.3 MG capacity, and has no grid aeration. Flow rate is 1.5 MGD, with
100% of the flow first going to Pond 1, then to Pond 2, then to Pond 3, then to Pond 4. System has
controlled periodic discharge; total system detention time is 30 days.  Most critical discharge permit
limits are: 25 mg/L CBOD, 75 mg/L TSS, no ammonia nitrogen limits.

Reported Problem Before Installation:
High chlorine demand during the summer caused by hydrogen sulfide production. Effluents also had
excessively high algae, CBOD5, and TSS levels.

Installation:
Date: June 2000, installed one (1) solar-only unit equal to SB2500* into Pond 3 and one (1) solar-only
unit equal to SB2500 into Pond 4.

Results:
Within two summers the maximum chlorine dosage rate applied decreased by 70%. Plant CBOD5
and TSS levels dropped significantly and all discharge limits are being met. An additional benefit has
been savings on electrical costs compared to the grid aerators that were being considered for Ponds
3 and 4 when the solar-powered SolarBees were purchased. Customer is very happy with the
SolarBees and how they have improved the treatment system while reducing chemical costs and
eliminating the need for additional grid aeration and associated energy costs.
